Keep Bed Bugs from Biting in Your Hotel
Bed bugs continue to be on the rise. Hotels are especially vulnerable due to the high rate of turnover.
How to Recognize an Infestation
Bed bugs are hitchhikers and can enter even the most pristine hotel. They're active at night and feed off of human blood. Fortunately, they're also easy to recognize. Look for a small bug, the size of an apple seed, with a flat, oval, rust-colored body.
How to Keep Infestations Under Control
What can hotel owners do to keep bed bug infestations under control? The first step is to contract with a pest control agency and set up a regular maintenance schedule. Regular treatments may not prevent your hotel from an initial infestation, but it can help keep future infestations under control.
Next, hotel owners should educate housekeeping staff on what to look for when cleaning rooms after guests have checked out. It's important to have an inspection plan in place so staff can identify the bed bugs before your guests do! Training employees on the telltale signs of bed bugs can help reduce infestations before they get out of control. Staff need to be on the lookout for living or dead bugs, blood stains from crushed bugs and dark droppings—all indicators of a possible bed bug problem.
Housekeepers need to be trained on what to look for while changing linens. Train staff to look closely at seams of mattresses and box springs, under nightstands and behind headboards. Bed bugs will also hide in the seams of upholstered furniture and in between floorboards.
As a hotel owner, little can be done to prevent guests from bringing in bed bugs. They will hitch a ride on luggage, blankets, pillows and even clothing. If you receive a complaint of bed bugs in a room immediately offer a new room to your guests. Offer to launder your guest’s personal laundry, washing and drying them separately in the hottest temperature allowable. Provide a bed bug fact sheet. Have a licensed pest control company like Scherzinger come in and inspect the room and thoroughly treat the room before renting it to guests.Authored By: ScherZinger
