Keeping Mosquitoes Out of Your Yard

June 2, 2014

Summer is nearly upon us – so you may have already started to notice a few pesky mosquitoes buzzing around while you’re enjoying the last days of spring. Get ready – late spring and summer in Columbus, OH, and the Midwest are the prime season for mosquitoes. It’s the time of year when they are most active. And although mosquitoes obviously cause the most problems when you’re outdoors, you may not know that your yard is actively attracting them! To keep your yard from becoming the perfect home for these biting pests, simply follow these useful tips below for creating a mosquito-free yard.

If you think your yard has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes this summer, there are a few things you can do right off the bat to eliminate possible breeding sites around your home. A common generic misconception is that mosquitoes breed in streams, ponds, lakes or permanent bodies of water. The finer truth, however, reveals that mosquitoes cannot successfully breed in flowing water. Instead, they prefer temporary or shallow bodies of water, and most successfully breed in marshy, muddy or shallow, stagnant water.

So the first step to prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home is to eliminate any and all standing water in your yard. Standing water can quickly and easily become stagnant water, and is often caused by a landscaping defect with poor or misdirected drainage. Other sources of stagnant water can include fishponds, swimming pools, birdbaths, containers left outside, storm drains, gutters, tarps and leaky spigots. The best mosquito prevention starts with identifying possible sources of stagnant water in your yard and working out a plan to eliminate them. Remember, if it can hold and trap water for a few days, it can become a mosquito breeding ground.

It’s also a good idea to apply insect repellent any time you venture outside – it’s an instant, temporary method for deterring mosquito bites. With more than 60 different species of mosquitoes in Ohio, including a few that can transmit diseases, you’re sure to come into contact with them throughout the late spring and summer. However, even in the absence of disease, mosquito bites can trigger allergic reactions, cause irritation and be a general itchy and annoying discomfort.
