Common Pests in Cincinnati, Ohio

There are thousands upon thousands of pests in the world…but fortunately, only some of them are common pests in Cincinnati, Ohio.

We think it’s important for everyone to know the common pests in our area, whether you’re a homeowner, landlord, or apartment dweller. You need to know what pests to watch out for—plus the signs you have a problem!

Today, we’re summing up the most common and troublesome pests in Cincinnati, Ohio: keep reading to find out!

Bed Bugs

Unfortunately, bed bugs are extremely common in Cincinnati. So common, Cincinnati regularly makes the top-ten lists for cities in the United States with the biggest bed bug problem. (Not exactly something we want to be known for!)

Because this pest is so common in our area, it’s important to know the signs and watch out for an infestation (especially after traveling).

Termites

Like bed bugs, termites are very common in Cincinnati (#14 in the nation for termites, in fact).

There are many different types of termites—from subterranean, to formosan, to dampwood, to drywood, and more. However, the most common type of termite in Cincinnati is the eastern subterranean termite.

This type of termite lives in underground colonies, building mud tubes to travel from the colony to their food source. Mud tubes are an obvious sign of this termite, but you should be aware of the other signs of termites as a homeowner. Letting a termite problem go undetected can result in major damage to your home!

Ants

Good news? We don’t have to worry about biting fire ants in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bad news? We do have to worry about many other types of ants:

  • Carpenter ant
  • Cornfield ant
  • Larger yellow ant
  • Pharaoh ant
  • Thief ant
  • Pavement ant
  • Little black ant
  • False honey ant
  • Allegheny mound ant
  • Lawn ant
  • Acrobat ant
  • Odorous house ant
  • Crazy ant

Most of these types are a nuisance—ruining your picnic or invading your home and spoiling your food. The carpenter ant, however, is both annoying and destructive! Carpenter ants chew through wood to make their nests, causing structural damage in the process. Like termites, this is one to watch out for to protect your home.

Spiders

Fortunately for the arachnophobic, Cincinnati isn’t home to spiders anywhere near the size of what you’d find in, say, Australia. However, we do have spiders in our area—including two you should watch out for: black widows and brown recluse spiders.

The black widow and brown recluse spiders are venomous, meaning that their bites aren’t just painful: they can be harmful to your health. While bites from these spiders are very rarely fatal, they can cause painful symptoms like swelling, aches, and open sores. These are two spiders you do not want to have invading your home!

In addition to the two venomous spiders, there are many other non-dangerous spiders common to our area, from grass spiders, to orb weavers, to wolf spiders, that can take up residence in your home.

Rodents

Cincinnati has a rodent problem. In previous years, we’ve reached #7 in the list of U.S. cities most infested with rodents.

Rodents are frustrating and destructive, chewing everything in sight—not to mention a health hazard. These pests can carry diseases, contaminating your food and even infecting your pets. Cincinnati is home to both rats and mice, so be sure to watch out for these furry pests.

Stinging Insects

Cincinnati has lots of different stinging insects. Mosquitoes? Check. Wasps? Check. Hornets? Check. Bees? Check.

All of these insects can be a problem. The sting hurts, of course, and many people are allergic. In addition, stinging insects like mosquitoes carry dangerous diseases that you don’t want to contract. That’s why it’s important to know what attracts these pests to your home.

Cockroaches

There are thousands of different types of cockroaches, but only a handful are common in Cincinnati: the German, Oriental, American, Pennsylvania wood, and brown-banded cockroaches.

Roaches are a much-hated pest for good reason: this fast-moving pest carries diseases, contaminates food, is hard to kill, and spreads quickly. To avoid a big infestation, you need to know the signs you have a cockroach problem.
