How Preventative Termite Treatments Work

If your home doesn’t have termites, count your blessings: this pest is a scourge, causing billions of dollars worth of damage in the United States every year.

But how can you keep your home termite-free? Today, we’re discussing preventative termite treatments: how they work, why you might consider them, and what your options are. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about preventative termite treatments.

How Do Preventative Termite Treatments Work?

As the name suggests, preventative termite treatments are designed to prevent a termite problem from happening—rather than eliminating an existing problem.

Preventative termite treatments involve an inspection of the interior and exterior of the property for existing termite problems or vulnerabilities. Following that, a customized prevention plan is created to address your home’s specific needs.
The preventative termite treatment might involve a liquid barrier or strategically placed termite bait stations.

A liquid barrier consists of an EPA-approved treatment applied to the soil in a perimeter around your home. In some cases, drilling, wood injections, or additional soil applications may be necessary, to ensure that the perimeter is unbroken. That way, there are no gaps through which termites can sneak in. If and when termites pass through this barrier in the soil, they are killed.

Termite bait stations work somewhat differently. These stations are placed strategically around the home, close to the foundation. The stations offer a low-toxicity, low-impact bait that prevents a termite’s molting and growing process. The bait is ready for the termites when they find it. Then, the worker termites unwittingly transport the bait’s active ingredient back to the colony, where it infects and then eliminates it.

Why Should You Consider Preventative Treatment?

When it comes to termites, the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” has never been more true.

Unlike other pests, termites typically go unnoticed for months—even years. That’s because this pest lives underground and travels via mud tubes into the home’s walls and floors. There, they chew through anything made of cellulose, silently doing thousands of dollars in damage over time.

Unfortunately, there are few obvious signs of termites. It’s not until significant damage has been done, or the colony becomes large enough that swarming occurs, that a homeowner notices there is a termite problem. At that point, the destruction has been done. It then takes quite a bit of money and time to fix the termite damage and treat the termites (often not covered by insurance).

For this reason, termite prevention is a better choice than termite treatment. In the long run, termite prevention is cheaper—plus, it offers you peace of mind. You’ll know that your home is termite-free and will stay that way.
